The Process
It is necessary for all new clients whether they are attending for hair or therapy services to have a consultation prior to offering them our services so that an accurate assessment can be made.
A consultation is offered to all new clients and will take place before the start of the treatment. Please allow extra time for this as you will need to complete registration forms and have a discussion regarding possible contraindications which may apply to you.
Your consultation will take place one to one. For all first appointments you will come with your hair freshly washed (within 48 hours) and it should be free of any additives such as gels or moisturisers and in the case of non-lock wearers, any extensions, braids or weaves. Please do not blow-dry your hair prior to this visit.
You will need to complete our registration forms and we will have an indepth discussion on issues such as the pros & cons of wearing locs, your hair care history, lifestyle, maintenance, styling and colouring options and depending on the type of locs you are having, installation of sample locs. This is a very important initial visit and because of the pictoral element of the consultation, it is suggested that you allow around 90 minutes.
You can start your new locs with around two inches of natural hair growth, but your hair will need to be monitored carefully to avoid excessive slippage during the next few months.
The locking session will not take place on the same day as the consultation but will take place at a mutually convenient time some in the future. The length of time it will take to complete your hair will depend on the type of locs you are having. Traditional sized locs can be completed within a day, however, prospective clients desiring small locks should note that their session may take considerably longer depending on the density and length of hair, size of head, size of locks desired and hours worked during the day. Regardless of the method used to start your locs, you need to be very patient and not have any pressing external commitments which will require your attention during this time. Your consultant will discuss with you what you will need to bring with you in order to ensure your comfort. For all loc clients you will be provided with our own own detailed tip sheet to remind you of the do’s and don’ts discussed at the consultation stage.
Your locktician will discuss with you how often you will need to attend retightening sessions. In the beginning, you may be asked to attend every four weeks especially if your hair is very short, you have a softer texture or you have very small locks. The average schedule for retightenings is around six weeks, but anything between 4 to 8 weeks is considered normal. It can be a false economy to go beyond this period of time. Small locs with long new growth at the roots are vulnerable and may be prone to breakage. Also, you will end up paying more for your session as you will have more regrowth to be retightened and remedial work may have to be done.
The consultation fee for all locking services is £30 and in order to avoid disappointment, you will be asked to leave a deposit of £75 in order to secure your chosen dates for your locking/retightening session should you wish to proceed to the next stage. Please think carefully as these deposits are non-refundable. The deposit for the Locking Session will be deducted from the balance you will need to pay at your installation. Please note that because of interim hair growth, quotes are only valid for two months from the date of the consultation.
For those of you deciding to part company with the perm, you will be pleased to note that you do not need to cut off your relaxed hair in order to have your new locs done. Only the new growth at the root of your hair will be locked as permed hair has been chemically altered and will not loc. You will need to discuss particular styling options with your consultant during this process.
